I have to comment on the bottled oxygen experiment. While I can see how injecting bottled oxygen could drastically increase horsepower, I will also say that I sincerely doubt the engine was running on 100% oxygen and fuel with no air coming in; even a 3hp lawnmower engine with the throttle blade open would drain that bottle in a matter of seconds (maybe less). Was the test done with the throttle completely closed and the engine still produced such power? How was the fuel metered in that experiment?
I'm willing to bet that bottled oxygen was added to the engine and the fuel was "richened" to take advantage of the added oxygen (though technically if it was done right it would still be running at or near stoich) much like nitrous is added today.
