Instantaneous Mileage

Hello All-

I am a new member to this forum with an active interest in Propulsion technology and in Automotive industry in general. I have graduated in EE not a automotive engineer, so I hope you will forgive me for some of my questions or ideas that would seem bizzare or strange. I am slightly aware of the workings of EFI or MPFI engines. My question is that is it possible to calculate the instantaneous mileage

1) if we know the ratio of the Fuel Injector opening 2) if we know the fuel pressure in the common rail and hence the flow rate. 3) the distance travelled.

Is it possible to create a microcontroller based device that will take the above inputs, adjust for variations(esp. the fuel injectors) and display the instantaneous mileage.

Regards- Gasser.

Welcome gasser! Glad to have you here.

What you are speaking of has been done! Well... if you have an OBDII vehicle, generally 1996 and up.

Both will provide instantaneous mileage, average, coolant temp, timing and all kinds of other information![/img]

I get to be the board greeter since we are not upgrading daily so...

gasser, Welcome to WalMart!

Oh wait that's my other life...

Welcome to mpg Research.com. Other than me, there are lots of helpful friendly people here :D

Oh common now, dont be self defecating . This board wouldnt be here without all the work YOU do.

RecoveringGasaholic might not know everything there is to know about cars and mileage (but do any of us?). She rocks when it comes to keeping this board working.

Welcome gasser! I personally have the Scanguage and I love it. I have noticed that it uses the MAP sensor also as a part of it's mileage calculations along with fuel used and distance travelled. I found out about the MAP sensor when I was trying out a MAP sensor mod. I had placed a potentiometer in line with the MAP sensor and would dial in resistance once I got going to try and lean out the mixture. I noticed that the Scanguage was registering some fantastically high mileage numbers every time I dialed in the resistance; on the order of 80-90 mpg while cruising. I ended up abandoning the mod because it was to touchy to control. Once again, welcome.
